The Redeemer: Andera Del Sarto

The Gospel of Thomas According to Jessika

Originally Greek written in Syria (possibly Edessa) between 50 CE (liberal date) - 100 CE (conservative date) and translated into Coptic circa 300-340 CE.

These are the Secret Teachings
That the Living Jesus taught
And that Didymos Judas Thomas recorded.
1. And Jesus said,

Whoever comprehends
the true meaning of these teachings
will not experience death.

2. And Jesus said,

Let the one who seeks
continue seeking
until what is sought is found.

When that which is sought is found
the seeker will be wise.

Once wise, the seeker
will transcend all
and will attain rest
and will Be at Peace
concerning everything.

3. And Jesus said,

If those who lead you say,
The Kingdom of Heaven is in the sky
then the birds of the sky
are greater than you.

If they say to you,
The Kingdom of Heaven is in the sea
then the fish of the sea
are greater than you.

Rather, The Kingdom of Heaven
is inside of you
and it is outside of you.

When you come to know yourselves
then you will know,
and you will realize that you are
The Children of The Living Light.

But if you do not come to know yourselves,
then you will live in want,
and you will not be Whole.

4. And Jesus said,

Those old in days won't hesitate
to ask a little child seven days old
about the importance of Life and will Live.

Many who are first will be last
and they will become
One and The Same.

5. And Jesus said,

Know what is in front of your face,
and what is hidden from you
will be revealed to you.
For there is nothing hidden
that will not be revealed.

And there is nothing hidden
that will not be known.

6. His disciples asked him,

Do you want us to fast?
How should we pray?
Should we give to charity?
What diet should we observe?

And Jesus said,

Do not lie,
and do not do what you hate,
because all things
are known before Heaven.

After all,
there is nothing hidden
that will not be revealed,
and there is nothing covered up
that will not be known.

7. And Jesus said,

Blessed is the lion
that the soul devours.
And in trouble is the soul
whom the lion devours
for then the lion
will rule the soul.

8. And Jesus said,

Your Being is
like a wise fisher of the sea
who cast the net into the sea
and who drew up from the sea
a net full of little fish.

Among them the wise fisher
discovered a fine large fish
and threw all the little fish back into the sea,
and easily chose the large fish.

Those who have ears ; hear!

9. And Jesus said,

Once a sower went out,
and scattered a handful of seeds.

Some of the seeds fell on the road,
and the birds came and gathered them.

Other seeds fell on rocks,
and they couldn't take root in the soil.

Other seeds fell among thorns,
and they were choked and worms ate them.

Other seeds fell on good soil
and the flowering of these seeds
reached up to heaven.

Some of the seeds yielded sixty units
and some one hundred twenty units per measure.

10. And Jesus said,

I have brought a Fire to the world
and see I am keeping a vigil over it
until it gives warmth and Light to all.

11. And Jesus said,

This heaven above will pass away,
and the one above it will pass away.

The dead are not alive,
and the living do not die.
During the days,
when you ate what is dead,
you made it come alive.

When you are in The Light,
what will you do?

When you were One you created two.
But now that you are two,
what will you do?

12. His disciples said to Jesus:

We know that you are going to leave us.
Who will lead us?

Jesus said to them,

No matter where you are,
go to James the Just,
For all that concerns Heaven and Earth
is of his domain.

13. And Jesus said to his disciples,

What am I like for you?
to what would you compare me?

Simon Peter said to him,

You are like an angel of God.

Matthew said to him,

You are like a wise philosopher.

Thomas said to him,

Master, my mouth is utterly unable
to say what you are like.

And Jesus said,

I am not your master.
But because you have drunken,
from the same Bubbling Source as I
you have become enlivened.

And Jesus took Thomas aside,
and spoke three words to him.

When Thomas came back
into the company of his companions
they asked him,

What did Jesus tell you?

Thomas said to them,

If I were to tell you,
of but one of the words that Jesus spoke to me,
you would pick up stones and throw them at me,
and fire that would come out from those stones
and would consume you.

14. And Jesus said to them,

I f you fast,
you will harm yourselves,
and if you pray,
you will be praying in error,
and if you give to charity,
you will lose your spirit.

When you go into any region
and walk in the countryside,
if people welcome you,
eat whatever they offer to you
and heal the sick among them.

It is not what goes into your mouth
that harms you;
rather, it is what comes out of your mouth
that harms you.

15. And Jesus said,

When you see One
who was Not Born
prostrate yourselves on your faces
and worship,
for that One
Is the Living Light.

16.And Jesus said,

People think that I have come
to cast Peace Upon the World.

They do not know that I have come
to sow division upon the Earth:
fire, sword, war.

For there will be five in a house:
there will be three against two
and two against three,
parent against child
and child against parent,
and All will stand as One,
alone and in humility.

17. And Jesus said,

I shall give you what no eye has seen
and what no ear has heard,
and what no hand has touched
and what has never been known
by the heart or mind.

18. The disciples said to Jesus,

Tell us how our end will be.

And Jesus said,

Have you discovered, then,
the beginning
that you look for the end?
For where the beginning is
there is also the end.
Blessed are those
who know the beginning
for those will also know the end
and they will not know death.

19. And Jesus said,

Blessed is the One Who Is
before all existence.

If you become my disciples
and pay attention to my sayings,
these stones will serve you.

For there are Five Trees in Paradise;
they do not change, summer or winter,
and their leaves do not fall.

Whoever knows them will not taste death.

20. The disciples said to Jesus,

Tell us what The Kingdom of Heaven is like.

And Jesus said to them,

The Kingdom of Heaven
is like a mustard seed,
The smallest of all seeds.
When it falls on prepared soil,
it becomes a great tree
and becomes a shelter
for the birds of the sky.

21. Mary said to Jesus,

What are your disciples like?

And Jesus said,

They are like little children
who have entered into a field
that does not belong to them.
When the owners of the field come,
they will say, 'Give us back our field.'

Then the children
will take off their clothes in front of them
and the owners will see them naked,
and the children will leave
and return the field to its owners.

For this reason I say,
if the master of a house knows
that a thief is coming,
he will be vigilant
and will not let the thief
break into his house
and steal his possessions.

As for you, then,
be vigilant in the world.
Prepare yourselves with great strength,
so the thieves can't find a way to get to you,
for the thieves will see what you have
and will try to find a way to rob you.

Let there be among you
a wise person who understands.
When the crop is ripened,
he comes quickly
carrying a sickle and harvests it.

Those who have ears: hear!

22. Jesus saw some babies nursing.
And He said to his disciples,

These nursing babies
are like those who enter
The Kingdom of Heaven.

They said to him,

Then shall we enter The Kingdom of Heaven as babies?

And Jesus said to them,

When you make the two into One,
and when you make the Inner like the outer
and the outer like the Inner,
and the Upper like the lower,
and when you make male and female
into a single One,
so that the male will not be male
nor the female be female,
when you make eyes in place of an eye,
a hand in place of a hand,
a foot in place of a foot,
an image in place of an image,
then you will enter The Kingdom of Heaven.

23. And Jesus said,

I shall choose,
one of you from a thousand
and two of you from ten thousand,
and all will stand as One,
alone and in humility.

24. His disciples said,

Show us the place where you are,
for we must seek it.

And Jesus said to them,

Those who have ears: hear!

There is Light within A People of Light,
and their Light shines upon the whole world.
If they do not shine their Light,
there is darkness.

25. And Jesus said,

Love your brothers and sisters
As you love your own soul,
protect them as you would
the pupil of your eye.

26. And Jesus said,

You see the sliver in another's eye,
but you don't see the timber in your own eye.

When you take the timber out of your own eye,
then you will see well enough
to remove the sliver from another's eye.

27. And Jesus said,

If you do not fast from the world,
you will not find The Kingdom of Heaven.
If you do not observe and celebrate
The Sabbath as a Sabbath
you will not know God.

28.And Jesus said,

I came into the midst of the world,
and in the flesh I appeared to them.
I found them all drunk,
and I did not find any of them thirsty.

My soul cried for The Children of Humanity,
because they are blind in their hearts
and they do not see,
for they came into the world empty,
and they will leave this world empty.

Meanwhile, they are drunk.
only when they no longer partake
of the wine of the world,
will they become sober,
only, then can they return to themselves.

29. And Jesus said,

If the flesh came into being
because of Spirit,
it is a wonder,
but if Spirit came into Being
because of the flesh,
that is the wonder of wonders.

The greatest wonder is this:
How is it that this being, that is,
inhabits this nothingness?

30. Jesus said,

Where there are three gods, they are gods.
Where there are two or One,
I am with that One.

31. Jesus said,

No one is welcome as a prophet in his own village.
No one is welcome as a physician in his own home.

32. And Jesus said,

A city built on a high mountain
and fortified cannot be destroyed,
nor can it be hidden.

33. And Jesus said,

What you hear in your ear,
proclaim it from your rooftops.
No one lights a lamp
to put it under a basket,
nor does one put The Light
in some other hidden place.
Rather, one puts The Light on a lamp stand
so that all who enter and leave
may see The Light.

34. And Jesus said,

When a blind person leads a blind person,
both of them fall into a pit.

35. And Jesus said,

One can't enter a house and take it by force
unless one ties the hands of the owner,
then everything can be overthrown.

36. And Jesus said,

Do not worry, from morning to evening
and from evening to morning,
about your food;
what you are going to eat,
or about your clothing,
what you are going to wear.

You are more beautiful than the lilies,
which neither card nor spin.

As for you, when you have no garment,
what will you put on?

Who might add to your stature?
That very One will give you your garment.

37. His disciples said,

When will you appear to us,
and when will we see you?

And Jesus said,

When you are naked
as newborn children
then will you see
The Son of The Living One
and you will have no more fear.

38. And Jesus said,

Often you have desired
to hear these sayings
that I am speaking to you,
and you have had no one else
from whom to hear them.
There will be days
when you will seek me
but you will not find me.

39. And Jesus said,

The pharisees and the scholars
have taken the keys of knowledge
and have hidden them.

They did not go within
and they also prevented
those from going in
who wanted to go in.

As for you,
be as on guard as the serpent
and as simple as a dove.

40. And Jesus said,

A grapevine planted
away from The Living Water has no Life.
Since it has no Life,
it is soon pulled up by its root and perishes.

41. And Jesus said,

Whoever has something in hand
will be given more,
and whoever has little
will have even that taken away.

42. And Jesus said,

Be passersby.

43. His disciples said to him,

Who are you to say these things to us?

And Jesus said,

You don't understand who I am
from what I say to you?

Have you become like the people of the south?

They love the tree, but hate its fruit,
or they love the fruit, but hate the tree.

44. And Jesus said,

Whoever blasphemes
against The One will be forgiven,
and whoever blasphemes against The Logos
will be forgiven, but whoever blasphemes
against The Holy Spirit will not be forgiven,
either on Earth or in Heaven.

45. And Jesus said,

Grapes are not harvested from thorny trees,
nor are figs gathered from thistles,
for they yield no fruit.

The good offer goodness
from the secret places of their hearts;
the malicious produce maliciousness
from the maliciousness
they've stored up in their hearts,
and say malicious things.

That which is expressed
is what overflows from the heart.

45. And Jesus said,

From Adam to John the Baptist,
among those born of women,
No one is higher than John the Baptist,
Thus, the eyes will not be drawn aside.

Thus, I have said that
whoever among you becomes as a child
will know The Kingdom of Heaven
and thus, will be even greater than John.

47. And Jesus said,

One cannot mount two horses
or bend two bows.

A slave cannot serve two masters,
otherwise that slave will honor the one
and offend the other.

No one drinks aged wine
and immediately wants to drink young wine.

Young wine is not poured into old wineskins,
for they will break.

And aged wine
is not poured into a new wineskin,
for it will spoil.

An old patch is not sewn onto a new garment,
for it will tear.

48. And Jesus said,

If two make peace with each other
in a single house,
they will say to the mountain,
'Move from here!'
and it will move.

49. And Jesus said,

Blessed are you the whole ones,
and The Chosen Ones,
for you will find The Kingdom of Heaven,
for you have come from there,
and to there you will return again.

50. And Jesus said,

If they ask you from where you came, say,

We were born of The Light
there from where,
The Light is born of Light
Where Light came into Being of Itself,
and is revealed in Their Image,
Where They of The Light
are revealed in The Light!'

If they ask you who you are, say,
We are The Children of the Light
The Beloved of the Living One,
We are of The Living One.'

If they ask you,
'What is the sign
of The Living One within you?'

Say to them,
'It is movement and it is repose.'

51. His disciples said to him,
When will the dead be at rest,
when will The New World come?

And Jesus said to them,

What you are looking forward to
has already come,
But you do not see it.

52. His disciples said to him,

Twenty-four prophets have spoken in Israel,
and they all spoke of you.

And Jesus said to them,

You have disregarded The Living One
Who is in your presence,
and have spoken of the dead.

53. His disciples said to him,

Is circumcision useful or not?

And Jesus said to them,

If it were useful,
God would produce children
already circumcised from their mother.
Rather, the true circumcision is in Spirit
and is useful in every respect.

54. And Jesus said,

Blessed are you, the poor,
for yours is The Kingdom of Heaven.

55. And Jesus said,

Whoever cannot free themselves
from their father and mother
cannot become my disciple,
and whoever does free themselves
from their brothers and sisters,
and bear their cross as I do,
is not worthy of me.

56. And Jesus said,

Whoever comes to know the world
discovers a corpse,
and whoever discovers a corpse,
cannot be held worthy by the world.

57. And Jesus said,

The Living One's Kingdom is like the farmer
who had good seed and planted it.
At night the enemy came
and sowed weeds among the seeds.

The farmer did not let the workers
pull up the weeds, but said to them,
'No, otherwise you might pull up the weeds
and pull up the wheat along with them.

Leave them until the Day of the Harvest
when the weeds will be conspicuous,
and at that time
they will pulled up and burned.'

58. And Jesus said,

Blessed are those who have sought,
been tested and overcome;
they have found life.

59. And Jesus said,

Look to The Living One while you are alive.
If you wait until you are dead
you will search in vain for the vision.

60. Jesus saw a Samaritan carrying a lamb
and going to Jerusalem and he said to his disciples,

What will the man do with it?

They said to him, He will kill it and eat it.

Jesus said to them,

He will not eat it while it is alive,
but only after he has killed it
and it is without life.

They said, He can't do otherwise?

And Jesus said to them,

So also with you,
seek for yourselves what is alive,
or you might become a carcass
and be eaten.

61. And Jesus said,

Two will recline on a couch;
one will die, One will live.

Salome said,

Who are you?
You have climbed onto my couch
and eaten from my table as if you are someone.

And Jesus said to her,

I come from The One that is Whole.
What comes from that One
has been given to me.

Solome answered, I am your disciple.

And Jesus said,

For this reason I say,
if disciples are empty,
they will be filled with Light,
but if disciples are divided,
they will be filled with darkness.

62. And Jesus said,

I reveal The Mysteries to those
who become worthy of The Mysteries.
Do not let your left hand know
what your right hand is doing.

63. And Jesus said,

There was a rich person
who had a great deal of money.
He said, 'I shall invest my money
so that I may sow, reap, plant,
and fill my storehouses with produce,
that I may lack nothing.'

These were the things
he was thinking in his heart,
But that very night he died.

Those who have ears; hear!

64. And Jesus said,

A person was receiving guests.
when he had prepared the dinner,
he sent his slave to invite the guests.

The slave went to the first
and said to that one,
'My master invites you.'

That one said to the slave
'Some merchants owe me money;
They are coming to me tonight.
I have to go and give them instructions.
Please excuse me from dinner.'

The slave went to another
and said to that one,
'My master has invited you.'

That one said to the slave,
'I have bought a house,
and I have been called away for a day.
I shall have no time.'

The slave went to another
and said to that one,
'My master invites you.'

That one said to the slave,
'My friend is to be married,
and I am to arrange the banquet.
I shall not be able to come.
Please excuse me from dinner.'

The slave went to another
and said to that one,
'My master invites you.'

That one said to the slave,
'I have bought an estate,
and I am going to collect the rent.
I shall not be able to come.
Please excuse me.'

The slave returned and said to his master,
'Those whom you invited to dinner
have asked to be excused.'

The master said to his slave,
'Go out on the streets and bring back
Whomever you find to have dinner.'

Buyers and merchants will not enter
the places of The Living One.

65. And Jesus said,

A person owned a vineyard
and rented it to some tenants,
so they could work it
and he could collect its crop from them.

He sent his slave so the farmers
would give him the vineyard's crop.
They grabbed him, beat him,
and almost killed him,
and the slave returned
and told his master.

His master thought,'Perhaps
they didn't recognize my servant.'
So, he sent another slave,
but the tenants beat that one as well.

Then the master sent his son and said,
'Perhaps they will show my son some respect.'

Because the farmers knew
that he was the heir to the vineyard,
they grabbed him and killed him.

Those who have ears;hear!

66. And Jesus said,

Show me the stone
that the builders rejected:
that is the keystone.

67. And Jesus said,

Those who know The All,
yet, do not know themselves,
lack everything.

68. And Jesus said,

Blessings to you
when you are hated and persecuted;
there is a place in you
in which you are not persecuted;
this is a place where they cannot find you.

69. And Jesus said,

Blessings to those
who have been persecuted in their hearts:
they are the ones who have truly come
to know The Living One.

Blessings to those who go hungry,
that the stomach of the one in want may be filled.

70. And Jesus said,

If you bring forth what is within you,
what you have within you will save you.
If you do not, bring it forth, it will kill you.

71. And Jesus said,

I will destroy this house,
and no one will be able to rebuild it.

72. Someone said to Jesus,

Tell my brothers to share my father's possessions with me.

And Jesus said,

Who made me a divider?

Jesus turned to his disciples and said to them,

Who am I to divide?

73. And Jesus said,

The harvest is abundant,
but the laborers are few.

Pray to the harvest master
to send more laborers to the fields.

74. Someone said,

Lord, there are many around the well,
but there is no one who can draw from it.

75. And Jesus said,

Many are standing at the door
but it is only the solitary ones
who may enter the Bridal Chamber.

76. And Jesus said,

God's Kingdom is like a merchant
who had a supply of merchandise
and found a beautiful pearl.

That merchant was wise;
He sold the merchandise
and bought the pearl for himself.
so also with you,
seek the treasure
that is everlasting,
that is enduring,
where no moth comes to eat
nor worm comes to devour.

77. And Jesus said,

I Am
Is a Light over All.
I Am Is the All.

The I Am goes out from me
and unto me the I Am returns

Split a piece of wood
and the I Am is there.

Lift up a stone and you will find
The I Am is there.

78. And Jesus said,

Why have you come out to the countryside,
to see a reed shaken by the wind,
and to see a person dressed in soft clothes,
to see rulers and powerful ones?

The rulers are dressed in soft clothes,
but they cannot understand Truth.

79. A woman in the crowd said to him,

Blessed is the womb that bore you
and the breasts that fed you.

And Jesus said,

Blessed are those who have listened
to the Word of The Living One
and have truly followed it.

For there will be days when you will say,
'Blessed is the womb that has not conceived
and the breasts that have not given milk.'

80. And Jesus said,

Whoever has come to know the world
has discovered the body,
and whoever has discovered the body,
of that one the world is not worthy.

81. And Jesus said,

Let one who has become wealthy reign,
and let one who has power renounce.

82. And Jesus said,

Whoever is near me is near to The Fire,
and whoever is far from me
is far from The Kingdom of Heaven.

83. And Jesus said,

The Living Light is revealed to us,
but the image of The Living Light
remains concealed in The Living Light.

The Living Light will be seen by us
but the image of The Living Light
will remain hidden by The Living Light.

84. And Jesus said,

When you see your likeness, you rejoice.
But when you see the image
that came into Being
before you and that neither dies
nor ever becomes visible,
how much more joyful you will be!

85. And Jesus said,

Adam came from great power and great wealth,
but he was not worthy of you.

For had he been worthy,
he would not have known death.

86. And Jesus said,

Foxes have their dens and birds have their nests,
but The Son of Man has no place to lay down and rest.

87. And Jesus said,

How miserable is the body
that depends on a body,
and how miserable is the soul
that depends on these two.

88. And Jesus said,

The angels and the prophets
will come to you
and give you what belongs to you.

You, in turn,
should give them what you have,
Then ask yourselves,
'When will they come
to take what belongs to them?

89. And Jesus said,

Why do you wash the outside of the cup?
Do you not understand that
The One who made the inside is also
The One who made the outside?

90. And Jesus said,

Come to me, for my yoke is easy
and my way is gentle,
and you will find rest for yourselves.

91. They said to him,

Tell us who you are so that we may believe in you.

And Jesus said to them,

You search the face of Heaven and Earth,
but you have not come to know
The One who is in your presence,
and you do not know
how to experience the present moment.

92. And Jesus said,

Seek and you will find.
In the past, I did not tell you the things
about which you asked me.
I am willing to reveal those things,
but you are not seeking them, now.

93. And Jesus said,

Don't give what is holy to dogs,
for they might throw them upon the dung pile.

Do not throw pearls to pigs,
for they know not of good food.

94. And Jesus said,

One who seeks within will find,
and to one who knocks it will be opened.

95. And Jesus said,

If you have money, don't lend it at interest.
Rather, give it to someone who will not return it.

96. And Jesus said,

God's Kingdom is like the woman
who took a little yeast, and put it in a dough.
The dough was transformed into good bread.

Those who have ears; hear!

97. And Jesus said,

God's Kingdom is like a woman
who was carrying a jar full of flour.

While she was walking along a distant road,
the handle of the jar broke
and the meal spilled
behind her as she walked,
but she didn't notice.

When she reached her house,
she put the jar down
and discovered that it was empty.

98. And Jesus said,

God's Kingdom is like the person
who wanted to kill a powerful man.

While still at home he drew his sword
and thrust it into the wall to test his strength.
Then he was able to kill the powerful one.

99. The disciples said to him,

Your brothers and your mother are standing outside.

And Jesus said, to them,

Those who do what God wants
are my brothers and my mother.

They are the ones
who will enter God's Kingdom.

100. They showed Jesus a gold coin and said to him,

The Roman Emperor's people demand taxes from us.

And Jesus said, to them,

Give to the emperor
what belongs to the emperor,
Give to God
what belongs to God,
and give to me what is mine.

101. And Jesus said,

Whoever does not put aside
father and mother as I do,
cannot be my disciple,
and whoever does not love
father and mother as I do,
cannot be my disciple.
For my mother bore me,
but my true mother gave me life.

102. And Jesus said,

Woe, for the pharisees!
They are like a dog
sleeping in the cattle manger:

The dog neither eats
nor allows the cattle to eat.

103. And Jesus said,

Blessings to those who know
at what time of night
the thieves will come.
They will be awake and be prepared
before the thieves arrive.

104. They said to Jesus,

Come, let us pray today, and let us fast.

And Jesus said,

What wrong have I committed?
How have I erred?

When the groom leaves the bridal suite,
Then is the time to fast and pray.

105. And Jesus said,

The one who knows the father and the mother
will be called The Child of a Whore.

106. And Jesus said,

When you make the two into One,
You will become Children of Adam;
You will be A Son of Man
and when you say,
'Mountain, move from here!'
It will move.

107. And Jesus said,

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a shepherd
who had a hundred sheep.
One of them, the largest, went astray.
He left the ninety-nine
and looked for the One until he found it.

After he had toiled, he said to The Lamb,
'I love You, more than the ninety-nine.'

108. And Jesus said,

Drink from my mouth
and you will become like me.
I myself shall become like you
and the things which are hidden
will be revealed to you.

109. And Jesus said,

The Kingdom of Heaven
is like the person
who had a treasure hidden in his field
but did not know it.

When died he left the field to his son.

The son did not know
about the treasure in the field
and when he took the field over,
he sold it.

The buyer went plowing,
and found the treasure,
and began to lend money at interest
to whomever he wished.

110. And Jesus said,

Let one who has found the world,
and has become wealthy,
renounce the world.

111. And Jesus said,

The Heavens and the Earth
will roll up in your presence,
and whoever is living from The Living One
will not know fear or death.

Those who have self-knowledge,
the world cannot contain.

112. And Jesus said,

Unfortunate is the flesh
that depends on the soul.
Unfortunate is the soul
that depends on the flesh.

113. His disciples said to him,

When will the Kingdom of Heaven come?

And Jesus said,

The Kingdom of Heaven
will not come by watching for it.
No one will say, Look here, here it is!

Rather, God's Kingdom
is spread out upon the Earth,
and people cannot see it.

114. Simon Peter said to them,

Make Mary leave us, for women are not worthy
to become The Children of Heaven.

And Jesus said,

Look!
I will guide her to make her
A Child of Heaven,
so that she too may become
A Living Spirit.

For every woman who makes herself
A Child of Heaven
will enter The Kingdom of God.

The End

Most likely The Gospel of Thomas was composed in Greek, probably in Syria, perhaps at Edessa. Although the Coptic version is not quite identical to any of the Greek fragments, it is believed that the Coptic version was translated from an earlier Greek version due to the inclusion of some Greek words. The Coptic Version is the only complete version.

Historical Sources Three Greek Fragments

Other Info
All the texts have been available to the general public since 1975 and have been translated, published and annotated in several languages.
The first photographic edition was published in 1956, and its first critical analysis appeared in 1959.
Prior to the Nag Hammadi library discovery, the sayings of Jesus found in Oxyrhynchus were known simply as Logia Iesu: Wisdom sayings of Jesus

Scholars conjecture that the Thomas-collection seems to be an anthology made from texts disparate both in age & contents. The text is a compilation gleaned from previously written apocrypha (Doresse, 1958).
The 144 sayings of Jesus recorded by the Thomas-people (ca. AD 75 - 100) can be divided in:
(1) Q1-parallels (1 - 18) : 17%
(2) canonical gospels (19 - 64) : 41%
(3) other classical sources (65 - 76) : 9%
(4) sayings according to Thomas (77 - 114) : 33%
